Description
A group of three Space collectibles, including an Apollo 11 Press pass granting access to the Kennedy Space Center; a commemorative "Man-on-the-Moon Certified Medal" with "First Man On The Moon"-stamped First Day Cover; and a 50th Anniversary (1969-2019) Apollo 11 commemorative medal.
The lot is comprised of:
1. A vintage NASA Apollo 11 Press pass issued to "C. Colburn Hardy / General Dynamics" granting access to the Kennedy Space Center and Manned Spacecraft Center, serial number 61. The blue stock card is housed in a laminated pouch with a lapel clip. Stapled at lower right. Expected wear including slight curling, discoloration, and foxing, with green marker inscriptions found verso. Else very good to near fine. 4" x 2.5" x .5."
C. Colburn "Coly" Hardy was a New Jersey state legislator and Public Relations executive before embarking upon his second more celebrated career as a financial writer, editor, adviser, and lecturer. We can assume that he was invited to the Kennedy Space Center in some communications or press capacity, representing General Dynamics, a Fortune 100 aerospace and defense contracting company headquartered at Reston, Virginia. In the 1960s, General Dynamics was heavily involved in U.S. Air Force aircraft carrier manufacturing bids. Today, the company produces nuclear-powered submarines, tanks and armored vehicles, and business jets.
2. A "Man-on-the-Moon Certified Medal" produced by 99 Enterprises, comprised of: a First Day Cover affixed with a "First Man On The Moon" U.S. 10-cent stamp, postmarked July 20, 1969 and September 9, 1969; displayed above a decorative metal plaque modeled after the die of the same stamp that was carried into space. Printed in part verso as: "That moment in time and space is captured in this limited edition - a commemorative medal, a postmark of the landing day and the stamp whose die they carried to the moon." Minor traces of adhesive recto, else near fine. 4.875" x 3.5."
3. A 50th Anniversary (1969-2019) Apollo 11 commemorative medal, gold finish, reading "One Small Step For A Man / One Giant Leap For Mankind" encircling three head portraits obverse; and "First Foot Prints On The Moon / United States of America" around a lunar vignette on the reverse. Isolated surface imperfections including a clamped part of rim. Housed in an acrylic coin holder. The medal measures 1.5" diameter while the holder measures 1.75" diameter overall.
