Medal/Coin

A 1.75" x 1.625" Robbins medallion from STS-6, the first flight of Space Shuttle Challenger. From the personal collection of astronaut Story Musgrave, who served as Mission Specialist on STS-6. The Hexagonal sterling silver medallion is one of only sixty-seven flown on the mission. The obverse of the medal features a rendering of the Shuttle and TDRS (Tracking and Data Relay Satellite) in relief, the ship's name, and the crew's surnames around the rim. The reverse shows the surnames again, along with the launch and landing dates and place engraved: "April 4, 1983" and "April 9, 1983 / RW22 EDWARDS AFB, CA." With Robbins and sterling marks on edge, along with serial number "62F". Housed in original Robbins plastic case with serial number on adhered sticker and accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Musgrave. In near fine condition.

Franklin Story Musgrave (b.1935) is an American physician and a retired NASA astronaut. In 1996, he became the second astronaut to fly on six spaceflights, and he is the most formally educated astronaut with six academic degrees. Musgrave is the only astronaut to have flown aboard all five Space Shuttles.
