TLS

A typed letter signed by German inventor, Ferdinand von Zeppelin. 2p, measuring 8.75" x 11.25", Friedrichshafen, Germany, dated October 22, 1912. Typed on personal letterhead in German and signed "G v Zeppelin." Addressed to the Chairmen of the State Committee and the Stuttgart local group of the Württemberg Young Germany Association, Prof. Lachenmsier and Senior teacher Thumm in Stuttgart. Von Zeppelin thanks the men for an invitation to the first general meeting of the committee and sends his regrets that he will be unable to attend due to urgent work. The letter has flattened mail folds and light corner wear. Light foxing along the right edge. Pencil notations at the bottom. Boldly signed.

Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917) was a German general and later inventor of the Zeppelin rigid airships and founder of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin. During the American Civil War, von Zeppelin traveled to America and served as an official observer with the Union Army, during which time he visited the balloon camp of Thaddeus Lowe. His first air travel in a balloon during the visit is said to have inspired his later career in aeronautics. His first successful rigid airship, the Zeppelin LZ1, made its first flight on July 2, 1900. He built four additional airships and helped revolutionize the age of air transportation; from 1900 to 1914 the German Aviation Association transported 37,250 people on over 1,600 flights without incident.
