A. Lincoln DS For Twice Captured, and Wounded Soldier Who Captured Mosby's Rangers Veteran
Partially printed DS

A signed military appointment by President Lincoln for a veteran wounded at Bristoe Station. 1p of vellum, measuring 14.75" x 18.75", Washington, D.C., dated August 1, 1864. Boldly signed "Abraham Lincoln" and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. The document appoints "William P. Hagadorn…Second Lieutenant in the Veteran Reserve Corps." With patriotic motifs at the top and bottom margin. Blue paper seal is adhered at the upper left margin. Docketing at the top left corner. Mounted and attractively framed to the overall size of 25" x 29". The document has flattened folds, one which passes through Lincoln's signature. The document appears to have been sewn along the left vertical edge. Light toning, foxing, and soiling throughout. Boldly signed.

William Hagadorn (1843-1921) enlisted along with his younger brother in August of 1862 and was mustered into Company K of the New York 125th Volunteer Infantry. He was captured and held as a POW at some point in 1862 before being paroled at Harper's Ferry on September 15, 1862. Later, he aided in the capture of four "Mosby's Raiders" while on picket duty at Centreville, VA. In 1863, Hagadorn was wounded at the Battle of Bristol Station and captured while in hospital. After he was exchanged, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the 22nd Regiment of the Veterans Reserve Corps, a corps of soldiers too injured to serve in the regular army but able to perform guard duty and other lighter tasks.
