White Stanford
Stanford White DS as President of the Nissequogue Trout Club
A mortgage bond signed by Stanford White (1853-1906), the celebrated "American Renaissance" architect, as "Stanford White" at lower right. White signed the document in his capacity as President of the Nissequogue Trout Club, a business concern founded in Smithtown, Long Island in 1892. Also co-signed by organization secretary Ethelbert M. Smith at lower left and trustee Allen W. Evarts verso. The mortgage bond, No. 8, represented a $100 share in the company. With embossed seal at lower left. The signatures have been crossed out in red ink. Expected paper folds and chipped edges. Else very good to near fine. 9.25" x 17".
Stanford White was a partner of the prestigious New York City architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White. White was well-liked by his contemporaries, both for his physical dynamism--complete with huge handlebar ginger mustache--and effervescent personality. As such, he was commissioned to design many of the firm's residential projects in Long Island. One of White's most famous and enduring designs was the Washington Square Arch in New York City.
White maintained a strong foothold in Long Island. He was attracted to the region by the local trout fishing, and his wife Bessie Spring Smith came from Smithtown's founding family. White was killed at an event at Madison Square Garden in June 1906 by Philadelphia millionaire Harry K. Thaw, who believed White had sexually assaulted Thaw's wife, the model Evelyn Nesbit.
