Description
R.B. Hayes Appoints Interim Sec. of State. Rare & Historic DS Signed as President from the Executive Mansion.
1p, [8.125” x 9.75"], DS “RB Hayes”, “Executive Mansion, Washington” and dated December 21, 1878. President Rutherford B. Hayes appoints William Hunter, the second assistant to the Secretary of State “To discharge the duties of the Secretary of State" during the absence of William Evarts.
From the timing of his absence and the date of this appointment, it's likely that Everts was not present in Washington D.C. because of the upcoming Christmas holiday. An extremely rare and unique document like this one, appointing a key cabinet member, even an interim Secretary of State, rarely appears to market.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
