Description

Woodrow Wilson TLS: "I shall at once bring this matter to the attention of the Secretary of State"

A 1p typed letter signed by 28th U.S. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) as "Woodrow Wilson" at center right. July 16, 1913. [Washington, D.C.] Typed in blue ink on watermarked bifold stationery with "The White House / Washington" embossed at the letterhead. The innermost and outermost leaves are blank. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, a few extra wrinkles, and even, light toning. A partial paperclip impression is located at upper left. Else near fine. 7" x 8.875."

President Wilson wrote this letter to U.S. Senator from New York James A. O'Gorman (1860-1943), in part:

"I have received your letter of July 14th, together with its enclosure from Mr. Toomey [not included in this lot], and thank you for writing me. I shall at once bring this matter to the attention of the Secretary of State…"

Wilson demonstrates conscientious attention to his official correspondence just four months after his first inauguration. Wilson's first Secretary of State, William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925), would remain in this position until June 1915.

James A. O'Gorman served one term as U.S. Senator from New York, from 1911-1917. Prior to that, he was a New York Supreme Court Justice from 1900-1911 and from 1902-1906 the Grand Sachem of the Tammany Society.
