Rare Photograph of JFK, RFK & Marilyn Monroe from Birthday Event
A black and white photograph of President John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Marilyn Monroe, taken by White House photographer Cecil Stoughton. Measuring 9" x 8.75", [New York], dated 1967. This image was captured at Arthur Krimm's birthday party held for JFK; the photograph shows Monroe still wearing the infamously tight-fighting, sheer rhinestone-studded dress she wore earlier when singing at Madison Square Garden. Historian Arthur Schlesinger can also be seen on the far right, as well as singer Harry Belafonte seen facing the camera in the background. With multiple photograph copyright stamps on verso and handwritten notations crediting Stoughton. On the front is an identification notation made in white pencil at the top right corner. With bumped and creased corners, the photograph also has light soiling throughout. Overall very good.
President John F. Kennedy’s birthday celebration was an All-Star gala held in New York’s Madison Square Garden ten days before his actual birthday. The event was sponsored by the state and national Democratic Committees and Citizens for Kennedy as a fundraiser to erase debt incurred in the 1960 presidential election. However, the night is best remembered because of Marilyn Monroe's famous singing of a sultry version of “Happy Birthday” to the president. This would also be only a few months before her untimely death.
