Description
Near East / Holy Land, Judea, Herodian Classic period, ca. 1st century CE; Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Three mold-made terracotta oil-burning vessels. First is a pale-orange Herodian lamp with a flat base, rounded walls, a raised fill hole, and a flared, projecting wick spout. Second is a Roman buffware lamp with a concentric ring base, circular body, small wick spout, and a recessed tondo depicting a farmer planting seeds next to a grain stalk. Last is a red-orange lamp with a concentric ring base, pinched walls, rounded shoulders with impressed triangular designs and undulating spirals in low-relief, and a recessed fill hole. A fabulous ensemble from the ancient world! Size of largest (farmer): 3.375" L (8.6 cm)

Condition
Herodian lamp repaired from several pieces with some earthen material atop break lines. All items have age-commensurate surface wear, small chips along peripheries, fading to designs (where applicable), with earthen and mineral deposits throughout. Red-orange lamp has nice craquelure to areas of pigmentation.
