Description
Rome, Imperial, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A fabulous ensemble of five mold-made pottery oil lamps boasting creamy hues of tan, beige, taupe, and pink. Similar in form, each of the ancient vessels features a projecting wick spout and a large, annular fill hole. The first displays an almond-shaped base, a pointed handle, and a flat shoulder adorned with an incised starburst motif. The second shows a raised fill hole, a fin-like handle, and a rounded shoulder bearing an abstract design. The third lovely lamp appears to be a combination of the two previous ones with a triangular handle, a raised fill hole, and a rounded shoulder embellished by a starburst motif. Next, the fourth example exhibits a tab-like handle and a gently slanted shoulder decorated by a swirling vegetal pattern. Finally, the last piece presents a slipper-like form with an elevated fill hole, no handle, and a rounded shoulder showcasing a phytomorphic motif comprised of slanted striations. Size of largest: 4.125" L x 2.625" W x 1.375" H (10.5 cm x 6.7 cm x 3.5 cm)
