Item Details
Description
A 4to (10 x 12 inches) scrap book put together by a former Colonel in the 9th Maine Infantry Regiment. This book has over 90 letters from former solders of the 9th Maine, as well as a number from other Regiments that fought with the 9th at Fort Wagner and elsewhere. In addition there are a large number of GAR reunion publications and letters relating to the 9th and other Maine Regiments, including the 7th, 8th, 11th, 19th, 20th and more. In addition there are numerous newspaper clippings about the history of the 9th and reunion gatherings. There are also a number of items from the war, such as orders, passes and other things. There are items in this book from the two brothers who put it together, Colonel Jonas Franklin Dyer, Surgeon 19th Maine & Major George B. Dyer, Staff & Field 9th Maine. Jonas was the author of a book about his experiences as a surgeon in the Civil War, entitled ‘The Journal of a Civil War Surgeon’ (book was republished by Nebraska Press in 2003). Col. Dyer was later promoted to Medical Director of the Second Corps, Army of the Potomac, and this scrape book has many of the letters written to both brothers by former solders with answers to questions they had about what happened when and where, so these letters are packed with first-hand accounts from solders about the war. There are soldiers letters from Maine, Mass., N.H., Indiana and other states. There are also items saved by George about his brother’s death, including many letters of condolence from fellow soldiers.
Condition
Nearly all items in this scrap book are attached with glue along the left margin or the top margin and can be easily removed. The album itself is somewhat worn, but the items inside are fine, except newspapers which are toned, as is typical.
