Doolittle's Raid was an air raid conducted on April 18, 1942 by the United States on the Japanese capital of Tokyo, among other places in mainland Japan, during World War II. This would ultimately serve as America's first retaliation against the attack on Pearl Harbor. While the raid caused comparatively minor damage, it proved to show major psychological effects on both sides. For the Americans, the raid served as a much-needed morale booster. For the Japanese, however, it raised some fears about the ability of military leaders to defend the home islands. For his service, Doolittle was ultimately awarded with a Medal of Honor and received a promotion to brigadier general.
