Description
Fine m1850 foot officer's sword presented to Lieutenant Henry C. Jackson, 27th New York Infantry and 16th New York Light Artillery. Solingen, [Germany]: W. Clauberg and Ames, Chicopee MA hallmarks. Retailed by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. Manufacturer and retailer marks stamped to either side of ricasso. Scabbard mount is finely engraved: "Presented to Lieut H.C. Jackson. By his friends. Wm. Stuart, D.D. Denton, D.R. Grant, B. Marks, C. Strong, R.H. McK[illeg.]. Reverse of the mount bears an Ames, Chicopee MA stamp.
In exceptional condition; its blade almost fully retains its patriotic etched design.
This sword, likely given to Jackson to celebrate his commission as a Lieutenant in the 27th New Infantry, bears an inscription on the scabbard which notes it was presented by five friends (all listed). Jackson transferred to serve as an officer in the 16th New York Light Artillery in late 1861. The 16th New York Light Artillery was primarily engaged in defending Washington D.C. during the Civil War, safeguarding the seat of government from Confederate threats.
