Description
Captured Confederate States of America ten dollar banknote. Richmond, Virginia, February 17th 1864. With period inscription to verso: “Part of the funds of the Army of Northern Va. Surrendered by Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House Va. April 9th 1865 – A.B. Lawrence Lt. Col. & Chief QrMr. U.S. Forces at Appomattox C.H..”

A captured $10 CSA banknote with a period inscription describing them as funds surrendered by General Robert E. Lee after his surrender at Appomattox in April 1865.

As Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac, Abram Burtt Lawrence is known to have collected many souvenirs like this which he no doubt presented to friends, family, and acquaintances after the war. Lawrence received several conspicuous promotions and brevets during service the Civil war and resigned in 1866, after having gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
