Full plate albumen three-quarter length studio portrait. Richmond, Virginia: G.W. Minnis, n.d. Photographer's imprint gilt-lettered to mount recto.
A portrait of a Virginia Confederate officer by Minnis of Richmond. The unknown subject wears a thick great coat over his uniform and cradles an ornate officer’s sword across his body. A cap held toward the lens appears to have two brass letters pinned to it, which most likely were the initials of the company to which the officer belonged.
The photographer, George Minnis, was from Pennsylvania but relocated to Richmond to open a gallery. An accomplished daguerreotypist before the War, he was considered a master by Confederate leadership. General Lee considered him a personal photographer.
