Description
Three quarter length albumen CDV portrait of Lt. John Gale. Period ink inscription mount recto identifies the subject: "Lt. John Gale. 1st Md. Artillery C.S.A." Verso blank where photographer's imprint is evidently excised.
Gale is referenced in several contemporary accounts as at times commanding the 1st Maryland Heavy Artillery. In 1864, he was commended for gallant conduct after capturing four pieces of enemy artillery.
In this view, Lt. Gale stares determinedly as the camera’s lens. He wears an officer’s uniform trimmed in artillery red.
