Description
Unmounted albumen photograph. Alexander Gardner (1821-1882). Ink inscription to verso reads: "Hanging Lincoln conspirators" alongside later numerical notations. ~4 1/2 x ~3 1/2 in.
A grisly outdoor view showing the hanging corpses of four conspirators in Lincoln’s assassination: Mary Surratt, Lewis Paine, David Herold, and George Atzerodt. Each of the four has their head concealed by a hood and their limbs bound. The view was captured by Alexander Gardner, who extensively documented the aftermath of the president’s assassination.
Gardner's photograph captures the conspirator's corpses after “the drop." Mary Surrat, the first woman hanged in American history, is on the far left. In the foreground are mustered soldiers in uniform as well as a crowd of civilians, several with umbrellas. A group of uniformed soldiers, at least 10, stand on the ramparts behind the gallows.
Condition: small nicks at lower corners and edge.
