Item Details
Description
"...she is a good cook, a good person and an excellent woman as far as I have seen. I do not think it right on my part to keep her from her child."

Autograph document signed by John Bay. N.p., 10 August 1843. 1 page.

A rare document promising to reunite an enslaved woman with her child. The author, John Bay, evidently purchased a enslaved women name Bouretta, separating her from her child. He writes to the seller, wishing to see them reunited: "As Bourette is unhappy & wants her child that you have, I have concluded to let you have her at what I bought her - she is a good cook, a good person and an excellent woman as far as I have seen. I do not think it right on my part to keep her from her child."

An exceedingly scarce slavery document.
