Description
The Evening Programme...J. Wilkes Booth!...Romeo! Chicago, Illinois: McVicker's Theatre, 4 June 1863. 2 pages, ## x ## in.

A Civil War era theater program and broadside enthusiastically advertising the last appearance of John Wilkes Booth at the McVicker's Theater in Chicago. The starpower wielded by Booth is on full display- his name and role as Romeo as the largest headline on the program.

Despite his outspoken sympathies for Southern secession, publicly calling it "heroic," Booth maintained a busy performance schedule throughout the war. He toured almost exclusively in Union cities to rave reviews. During this residency at the McVicker's Theater, he performed in Richard III, Marlle Heart; Or, the Sculptor's Dream, and Romeo & Juliet (advertised here).
