Description
Full-length studio albumen CDV portrait of General George Armstrong Custer in frock coat uniform. New York: Mathew Brady, [February 1864]. Photographer's imprint to mount verso and recto alongside period ink inscription reading "Gen'l. Custer". Attractively matted and framed with modern informational plaque. Verso mat has been thoughtfully altered in order to view the Brady imprint to CDV verso.

CDV portrait of George A. Custer, originally taken by famed photographer Matthew Brady’s studio in February 1864, while Custer was serving as a Brigadier General of Volunteers in the Union Army (Brady Photo K-31).

At Gettysburg, Custer’s brigade would lose more men than any other cavalry brigade engaged at the battle. Despite being outnumbered, Custer and his men ultimately defeated confederate General J.E.B. Stuart’s attack at what is now known as East Cavalry Field. In 1864, Custer went on to defeat General Jubal Early at Cedar Creek, and subsequently played a major role in the final campaigns of 1865, destroying or capturing the remainder of General Early’s command at the battle of Waynesboro, and blocking the Army of Northern Virginia’s final retreat.

Custer's exploits and ultimate demise at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 are widely known to those with even a passing interest in American history.
