Item Details
Description
Presentation sword-cane. Ebonized wood walking stick with gold-filled cap and brass ferrules presented to J.B. Sheeler. Cap engraved: "Presented to J. B. Sheeler / By The / U P Moulders / as a / token of respect / Omaha, Neb. / Nov. 17th 88."

A fine, presented cane containing a hidden sword with a blade featuring engraved designs. J.B. Sheeler is listed among the Union Pacific Foundry Employees on 14 February 1888 in the "Omaha Daily Bee." The list acknowledged citizens who had contributed to the Bee's Heroine Fund. Though not specified, it is clear that Sheeler acted in a position of leadership at his workplace. Further research may reveal more details of Sheeler's activities.

Genuine sword canes from the period are scarce.
