Description
Dr. B.J. Kendall's Blackberry Balsam The Most Wonderful Remedy of the Age!. Montpelier Vermont: Union Card Company, [1870s?]. ## x ## in. printed broadside, framed.

A delightful 19th century broadside advertising a quack medicine panacea touting to cure "Cholera, Cholera Morbus, Dysentery, and All Summer Complaints,” specifying that it is recommended by physicians and safe for children. Dr. B.J. Kendall of Enosburgh Falls, Vermont was advertising himself as a "Druggist and Apothecary, and dealer in Drugs, Medicines, Dye Stuffs, Perfumery, Hair Preparations, Brushes, Combs, Soaps, Toilet Articles, Stationery, &c." as early as 1870 (see The St. Albans Weekly Messenger, 30 December 1870, p. 8), and his "Blackberry Balsam" first appears in Vermont newspapers in 1873 and is advertised regularly until circa 1914. Not to be confused with Wakefield's Blackberry Balsam which was advertised in the Kansas region from the 1860s until the 1920s.

Condition: old folds with minor toning, not examined out of frame.
