Archive

A collection of five photographs, each individually signed by military officials present during the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the U.S.S. Missouri. Signatories include four Naval and Air Force commanders from the countries of England, New Zealand, China, and the Netherlands, as well as the Missouri's Commanding Officer, Stuart Murray. Varying degrees of light toning, bumped corners, and docketing throughout. Very good overall- representing one of the most important events of the 20th century.

The lot includes:

1.) Air-Vice Marshal Leonard M. Smith of the Royal New Zealand Air Force signing the Japanese surrender. Inscribed at lower right corner: "Leonard Smith/ Commander Air V. Marshal/ Royal New Zealand Air Force". 6" x 8".

2.) Dutch Admiral C.E.L. Helfrich signing the Japanese surrender. Bearing his autograph at lower right in blue pen. Stamped as an official U.S. Navy photograph on verso. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the Netherlands Embassy in Washington, D.C., dated September 27, 1957. 8" x 10".

3.) Admiral Sir Bruce Austin Fraser signing the Japanese surrender. Inscribed at lower right as "Fraser of North Cape/ Admiral of the Fleet". Stamped as an official U.S. Navy photograph on verso. 8" x 10".

4.) General Xu Yongchang signing the surrender with MacArthur and Chester W. Nimitz in the background. Signed and inscribed by him in Chinese characters at middle right. Stamped as an official U.S. Navy photograph on verso. 8" x 10".

5.) Stuart S. Murray, Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Missouri, signed wire photograph. Inscribed in blue pen at middle left: "Stuart S. Murray/ Captain U.S. Navy/ Commanding Officer U.S.S. Missouri/ Tokyo Bay, Japan/ Sept. 2, 1945". Backstamp from Wide World Photos present on verso. 8" x 10".
