Tsar Nicholas I Signed Letter with Accompanying Sealed Envelope
LS

A Russian letter signed by Tsar Nicholas I. 3pp of a bifolium, measuring 8.5" x 13.75", St. Petersburg, dated April 3, 1848. Signed in Cyrillic letters by Nicholas I. Addressed to Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies, congratulating him on the birth of his son, Giuseppe, Count of Lucera, who was born on March 4th. Untranslated from Russian. The letter is accompanied by the original envelope with a large paper seal. With flattened mail folds and separations at the cross folds. Light, uneven toning. Minor wear and soiling to the seal. Boldly signed.

Tsar Nicholas I (1796-1855) was the third son of Paul I, who inherited the Russian Empire following the death of his brother Alexander I in 1825. Nicholas's reign is mainly remembered as controversial, having started with the failed Decembrist revolt and continued with questionable geographical expansion and repression of dissent. Unlike his brother, who's nickname was "The Blessed", Nicholas bore the nickname of "The Stick", popularized by Lev Tolstoy.
