Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker. Folio (9.75? x 13.5?), 391pp. Printed in red and black, with initial letters designed by Edward Johnston. Bound by the Monastery Hill Bindery in full burgundy Morocco, large gilt and green embossed cross at cover with gilt title at spine, lined with burgundy satin, with an elaborate green, gilt and burgundy interior cover. Extra-illustrated with handsome tinted etchings of biblical scenes by W. French and Piand.

Light wear to edges, binding just a tad loose at first pages, very light, scattered foxing and bumped and lightly worn corners, overall very good condition.

"This edition of the Bible is considered the masterpiece of the Doves Press....The type is a particularly crisp and faithful version of Jenson's fifteenth-century roman. It was cut in only one size, which was used in all of the half-hundred issues of the Press. When the Press was discontinued in 1916, the type and matrices were destroyed by Cobden-Sanderson to prevent their misuse" (Huntington Library, Great Books in Great Editions).
