An August 1776 issue of London's "The Gentleman's Magazine" containing an early British publication of the Declaration of Independence as well as a rare map of North America. By Sylvanus Urban. London: Printed by D. Henry at St. John?s Gate, August 1776. Small octavo, pages 337-388. Containing a very early English printing of The Declaration of Independence, which appears on pages 361 and 362. Also included are "Proceedings of the American Colonists", which includes the passing of the Port Bill in Boston, appearing on pages 377-381. Also present is "A New Map of North America From the Latest Discoveries", measuring 15.25" x 14" when unfolded, located on page 349. It is rare to see an issue of this magazine that has retained the map. The magazine was previously disbound from a volume, with wear at the spine. Light overall toning. The map is in pristine condition. Overall very fine. Accompanied by a COA from Harmer Rook Galleries.

News of the drafting of the Declaration of Independence did not reach London until August 10, 1776.
