John Hancock DS With Big Signature!
Partially printed DS

A 1781 partially-printed military appointment signed by John Hancock as Governor of Massachusetts, Boston, dated February 16, 1781. Signed "John Hancock" in the stateman's iconic script, and countersigned by "John Avery" as Secretary. The document appoints "Jahleel Woodbridge Esq. to be one of the Justices to keep the Peace in the county of Berkshire in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for the Term of seven years?" With a large white paper seal at the upper left corner. On verso is a sworn statement, dated August 22, 1781, declaring that Woodbridge appeared to take the oath before James Barker and Charles Goodrich. 1p, measuring 11.5" x 19". With flattened folds and separations at the folds. Repaired with archival tape on verso. Toning and soiling along the folds and at the edges. One fold runs beneath Hancock's signature affecting Just the "J" and "k". Large and bold signature.
