Antonio de Padua Mara Severino Lpez de Santa Anna y Prez de Lebrn (1794-1876), known as Santa Anna, was a Mexican politician and general. His influence on post-independence Mexican politics and government in the first half of the nineteenth century is such that historians of Mexico often refer to it as the "Age of Santa Anna". He rose through the ranks of general and president at various times over a turbulent 40-year career and served as President of Mexico on seven non-consecutive occasions over a period of 22 years. He is probably best remembered for his total victory over the Texans at the Alamo.

An infamous "Santa Anna Bond" such as this would have been issued in New York City while Santa Anna was living in exile. While solidifying his schemes to depose Emperor Maximilian, he issued these bonds in the hopes that he might raise enough capital to regain his power. Santa Anna's plans ultimately failed and only returned to Mexico after a general amnesty was issued by President Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada in 1874. By that time he was crippled and nearly blind from cataracts, and he would die two years later at the age of 82.
