Sir William Temple Clipped Signature with Portrait Engraving
Signature
A clipped signature of Sir William Temple accompanied by an engraved portrait. Small slip, measuring 3.5" x 3", n.p., n.d. Two account lines are visible followed by Temple's signature "W Temple." The account appears to be payments for himself and servants, totaling ?244. The slip has been mounted to a larger sheet, measuring 10" x 5.75" overall. The accompanying engraving is a First Edition, published by Knapton of London in 1738. There is a small pencil notation at the bottom of the clipped signature sheet. Light toning throughout. Attractive, large signature. Light wear to the mount. Additional light toning and foxing to the portrait, with minor loss at the lower two corners.
Sir William Temple, 1st Baronet (1628-1699) was an English diplomat, politician and writer. For a brief period he served as a leading advisor to Charles II of England, with whom he later had a falling out with. Temple subsequently retired to the countryside and dedicated his time to gardening and writing. He is remembered in history today for employing a young Jonathan Swift as his secretary in 1689.
