Two Wm. Henry Harrison Campaign Stationery Sheets, 1st Election Used!

A pair of letters written on William Henry Harrison campaign stationery, dated 1840 and 1841, the stationery bears a portrait of Harrison as well as a humble wood cabin. One, dated October 28, 1840, has been printed in color while the other, dated March 14, 1841, is printed in black and white and also bears an Eagle motif and the cabin scene is captioned "Poor But Honest." Such political stationeries were clearly used by supporters of Harrison in the lead-up to the election of 1840 and into the first weeks of his presidency before his death. Each measuring 8" x 10". Both have flattened mail folds and minor loss to the address pages where seals were broken. The colored stationery has separations which have been repaired with tape on the verso. Light toning but still with bright colors. The black and white stationery has faint soiling. Overall very fine.

1. Brooklyn, New York, October 28, 1840; 3pp, Cyrus Bill to his cousin, Sarah M. Bill: "…I conclude your Brother Horace will succeed well at Rome. The current of publick opinion appears to be setting so strongly in his favor not only in his particular neighborhood but all over the State and Country that he can hardly fail of obtaining a liberal patronage and support for his Paper…"
2. Stanhope Iron Works, New Jersey, March 14, 1841; 2pp, A.W. Kinney to John Simmons (manager of the Ulster Iron Works): "…I have frequently had my mind on you in contemplation of erecting a Rolling mill here and had intended, whenever we came to a determination on that subject to have addressed you and if your engagements were such as to admit of you honorably quitting where you are; then to have proposed to you to come here…Now sir if we succeed here in making Pig iron as I anticipate; I have no doubt but that we shall erect extension works for making bar iron in all its varieties to use up all the pigs from 3 to 5 Furnaces…"

These illustrated campaign stationery sheets are quite rare. Their design is unlisted in Dr. Milgram's book "Presidential Campaign Illustrated Envelopes and Letter Paper 1840-1872." 1840 was the first year that campaign letter sheets were used as campaign materials in a presidential election and saw a political contest between Harrison and Martin Van Buren. Harrison (1773-1841) was the oldest man to be elected president, prior to Ronald Reagan, and served the shortest term period to date - at just thirty two days.
