Charles Darwin Attractive Woodburytype Cabinet Card Taken Late in Life
Cabinet card

A Woodburytype cabinet card photograph of Charles Darwin, London, [1877]. Portrait by Lock & Whitfield, entitled "The Late Charles Darwin." The famed naturalist is photographed facing right, dressed in a three piece suit. With the publishers' imprint "William Luks, London" on the lower mount. Measuring 4.25" x 6.5", No backstamp present on verso. Faint soiling to the mount. Near fine, very attractive.

Lock and Whitfield seem to have taken only one pose of Darwin, which was used in their series "Men of Mark." The series included individuals such as George Biddle Airy and friend and close correspondent, John Tyndall. This would be the second-to-last carte that Darwin would sit for before his death, but not the last photograph.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
