An oval portrait photograph of Charles Darwin in right profile by Herbert Rose Barraud. Measuring 4.25" x 6.5", ca. 1881, London, England. Barraud's name is stamped on lower left side of front mount, with larger backstamp verso. Captioned by an unknown hand below in pencil: "C. Darwin". Light foxing and age toning present, with minor bumping to edges. A very good to near fine example overall.

This image depicts one of five known poses of Darwin captured by Barraud in 1881, and is believed to be the last official photographic sitting before his death in 1882.

Herbert Rose Barraud (1845-1896) was a noted portrait photographer who had studios in London and Liverpool. Most of his images are Woodburytypes, then a newly developed process which lent itself admirably to portraiture, being able to render middle tones accurately.
