Robert H. Goddard Nitrogen Valve Drawing
Signed drawing
Goddard, Robert H. (1882-1945). A single sheet with a pencil drawing of a nitrogen valve, accentuated by various notations. 1p on evenly browned paper, measuring 5" x 7.75", n.p., undated. At lower left attributed as "By R. H. Goddard" and initialed by machinist Nils T. Ljungquist as "N. T. L. 1973". The notes read: "Nitrogen 35 lb. reducing valve gas flow" with "45 lbs" written at the bottom of the valve drawing and "35 lbs" written on the right side. The number "5" is written in the upper right-hand corner. Uneven margin along top edge, with light creasing and scattered markings throughout. Else, near fine.
Robert Hutchings Goddard (1882-1945) was an American engineer, professor, physicist, and inventor who is credited with creating and building the world's first liquid-fueled rocket, which was successfully launched on March 16, 1926. The valve component of Goddard's rocket depicted here was designed to reduce the pressure of nitrogen gas to 35 pounds per square inch, and was part of the overall pressurization system for the oxygen and gasoline tanks of the Goddard rocket. It was not until after his death, at the dawn of the space age, that he was formally recognized as one of the founding fathers of modern rocketry.
