Base Ball Day in Central Park Stereoview, ca. 1860s
Photograph

A stereo-view depicting a sizable crowd gathered in Central Park in order to spectate a game of baseball. Measuring 6.75" x 3.25", New York, ca. 1860s. Published by E. & H. T. Anthony & Co., captioned on verso "Central Park. (New York.)/ Base Ball Day." The photograph, mounted on yellow board, shows a group of young boys sitting on the grass in the foreground, with a second group of men standing behind them. While no baseball equipment is visible, the figures standing in the scene's background seem to resemble a diamond formation. Expected soiling and discoloration to outside perimeter, with bumping to edges; scattered foxing verso. A very good example overall.

E. & H. T. Anthony and Co. was the largest supplier and distributors of photographic supplies in the United States during the 19th century. Edward Anthony (1819-1888), a civil engineer who studied photography alongside Samuel Morse, opened his first New York-based daguerreotype gallery in 1842. His brother, Henry T. Anthony (1814-1884) would join the business a decade later. Throughout their career, the brothers would notably maintain a close business relationship with famed photographer Mathew Brady.

The Anthony's Base Ball Day images are particularly interesting, as Henry was one of the original New York Knickerbockers during the early 1850s, serving as both Treasurer and Vice President of the club.
