Charles Darwin Albumen Print Postcard, After One of Last Known Photos
Photograph
An albumen print photograph depicting Charles Darwin, issued as a postcard. Measuring 3.5" x 5.5", undated, London, England. From a photograph originally captured by photographers Elliot & Fry, produced later as a postcard by printers J. Beagles & Co. Slight curling to edges, with surface cracking at lower middle and moderate creasing throughout; scattered soiling verso. Otherwise, a clean image.
Elliott & Fry was a Victorian photography studio founded in 1863 by Joseph John Elliott and Clarence Edmund Fry. For a century, the firm's core business was taking and publishing photographs of the Victorian public and social, artistic, scientific and political luminaries.
According to Gene Kritsky, maintainer of an archive of Darwin photographs, this image was from a photography session conducted at Down House. Darwin himself is known to have captioned a different photograph from the same sitting as "1879". It was later widely sold and distributed on heavy card stock by Elliot & Fry, with a caption dating it "Circa. 1880".
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
