Pamphlet/Booklet
An English 1792 publication of Thomas Paine's "Common Sense." London: H. D. Symonds, 1792. Small twelvemo, 36pp. The publication is "A New Edition, with several Additions in the Body of the Work. To which is added, an Appendix; together with an Address to the People called Quakers." The front page has a "Hebrew Union College" blind embossed stamp. With pencil and ink notations written on the first and second page. Toning, staining, and foxing throughout the text. Binding is loose, with some pages having become detached. Chipped edges and rounded corners. Overall good.
Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an English-born intellectual, inventor, and radical pamphleteer who influenced both the American and French Revolutions. His powerful pamphlet, Common Sense (1776), was the best-selling original work published in eighteenth-century America and had a pronounced impact on the Revolution by making the case for complete independence from Great Britain; General Washington even ordered the first number to be read aloud to his men.
