A typed letter signed by Clementine Churchill, wife of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. 1p, measuring 7" x 8.75", Whitehall, London, dated February 29, 1952. Signed "Clementine Churchill" and addressed to Mr. Martin. Typed on 10 Downing Street letterhead with flattened mail folds. Pencil notations at the lower right corner. Large, bold signature.

In full: "I have read your letter with deep interest and will pass on what you say to my Husband [Winston]. I am much interested to hear that you are in charge of the Guards and Cavalry Section at Lloyds Bank and that you knew some of my family."

Baroness Clementine Spencer Churchill (1885-1977) was a British aristocrat, social activist, and wife of Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She met Churchill in 1904, and the couple married four years later. During the First World War, Clementine organized canteens for munitions workers and during the Second World War, she acted as Chairman of the Red Cross Aid to Russia Fund, President of the Young Women?s Christian Association War Time Appeal and Chairman of Maternity Hospital for the Wives of Officers, Fulmer Chase, South Bucks. A shrewd political spouse, she was Churchill's close confidant and often gave him advice during wartime. She was also a keen promoter of social and humanitarian causes (including women's rights), often in defiance of Winston, and was unafraid to voice her opinions regardless of her husband?s powerful allies or enemies. Throughout her life she was granted many titles, the final being a life peerage following the death of her husband in 1965. Numerous historians have suggested that without her, Winston would not have been able to withstand the strain of being Prime Minister during WWII.
