Description
Breech-loading, single shot, .50 caliber carbine. Baltimore, Maryland: Poultney & Trimble, patent 23 June 1857. Overall 39 in. Barrel length 20 in. Lock stamped with maker mark: "Address / Poultney & Trimble / Baltimore. U.S.A." and "Manufactured by Am. N m'ch'n Wks Springfield, Mass” and Patent marked to frame under front end of sling bar: "Smith's Patent / June 23. 1857". Left side of the stock bears government inspector cartouches. Serial no. 11489 twice to underside of frame.
Invented by physician Gilbert Smith of Buttermilk Falls, New York, in late 1855. Widely used by Federal cavalry regiments, they are known to have been issued to the 1st Massachusetts, 6th and 9th Ohio, 1st Connecticut, 7th and 17th Pennsylvania, 7th and 11th Illinois, and the 3rd West Virginia. Walnut stock is nice and dark showing honest use while all other components are intact.
