[CIVIL WAR] Identified Officer's Sword
Item Details
Description
Imported Civil War Model 1850 non-regulation Staff and Field officer's sword. Gebruder Weyersberg maker mark alongside Horstmann & Son's Philadelphia retailer stamp.

Identified to brevet Captain William Andrew Anderson, 20th Indiana Infantry.

This example was produced by the German sword maker Gebruder Weyersberg for the American market. The blade's patriotic acid-etched design is worn but present.

This sword was kept by William Andrew Anderson's family until 2008 and is accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance. Captain Anderson is listed as being the Adjutant of the 20th Indiana, though he may have had service in a previous regiment before his commission in the 20th. At the close of the war, he was made a Captain by brevet and commended for "gallant and meritorious conduct at the battle of Boydton Plank Road and Amelia Springs."
