Description
Impressive group identified to Captain Benjamin F. Tucker of the 1st Maine Cavalry. The 1st Maine Cavalry was a heavily engaged unit that saw over 40 battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Over the course of its long and active service, the regiment lost over 500 of its men. Material relating to the 1st Maine Cavalry is highly prized. This lot includes:
1. Captain Tucker's cavalry shoulder straps. Yellow-gold wool with double gold bullion bars and borders, all trimmed on inner and outer edges with jaceron.
2. Captain Tucker's cavalry officer's hat insignia. Embroidered gold bullion crossed sabers and stamped brass false-embroidered "1" on black velvet with jaceron border.
3. "Against Rebellion" Regimental ID token badge with McClellan shield badge. Shield badge obverse reads "McClellan" above a profile bust of General George B. McClellan with laurel wreath. Original pin affixed to reverse. Suspended brass disc obverse stamped: "Cap't. B.F. Tucker / Cav. / Co. B / 1st. / Reg. Maine". Reverse with legend "Against Rebellion / 1861" surrounding a Federal shield reading "Union".

Tucker was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 1st Maine Cavalry in October 1861. He was promoted to Captain on July 1st, 1862, and transferred to command Company B. His final promotion came on July 11th, 1864, when he rejoined the staff as Major until mustering out at Petersburg, Virginia, on August 1st, 1865. Records show that Tucker was wounded at Saint Mary’s Church, Virginia, on June 24th, 1864.
