Dyer, 9th Maine Infantry and includes two partially printed documents dated May 1st, 1865 appointing Dyer as Provost Marshal in Raleigh, N.C. under the order of Major Gen. Schofield. Northrup, South Carolina, first Commissary-General of the Confederate Government and not to confine him but give him the liberty of the town, before his being sent to Richmond. Very Truly Yours W.W. Holden’. This letter appears to be entirely in Holden’s hand. William Woods Holden (1818-1892) was the Governor of North Carolina at the time, appointed by President Andrew Johnson as the 38th Gov. and later elected as 40th Gov. Holden was the second governor in American history to be impeached, and the first to be removed from office; plus an inked manuscript letter asking for permission to travel to the north of the Potomac to visit ‘kindred’ from a woman named Mrs. Robert Rawson in Warrenton, N.C.
