Description
An inked manuscript unlined letter sheet written by Lucy D. Bryan to Union Army Provost Marshall of Raleigh, N.C. Major G.B. Dyer. This single page letter reads as follows: ‘Major Dyer, I have some servants that I wish to leave my lot. The mother, two daughters, two grandchildren, & her youngest son, sixteen years of age. They have been very impertinent & disobedient. For that in the first place I wish to get rid of them, & in the second place I am not able to support them. I have asked them time after time to leave but they are still here. Now I must apply to you to relieve me, & I know you will do what you can. Dr. Drury requested me to apply to you as a friend as well as Provost Marshall if I should be in trouble, & I can truly say I am at this time. Should you like to hear further particulars, please call on me at any time that suits your convenience. Respectfully Lucy D. Bryan Monday Morning May 22nd 1865.’ In the 1860 Federal census Lucy is listed as head of her household with real estate valued at $5,000, and estate at $15,000.
