Description

A small archive of 4 documents related to the death of Private Charles H. Miner, Co. F, 26th Connecticut Infantry. Archive includes:

Receipt completed in manuscript. New Orleans, 13 January 1863. 1 page, 8 ½ x 4 ½ in. On W.R. Bell Undertaker letterhead. A receipt for the "metal cases and attendance" for Charles H. Miner.

Final Statement of Private Charles H. Miner of Company F, 26th Conn. Vols. Deceased. Autograph letter signed by Captain L. A. Gallup. Camp Parapet, Louisiana, 26 January 1863. 1 page, 4to, 8 x 10 in. Docketed to verso. Records Minor's physical description, enlistment details, circumstances of his death, and accounting of the advance he received for clothing and what money his heirs are still owed.

Letter signed by Colonel T. G. Kingsley of the 26th Connecticut Regiment. Camp Parapet, Carrollton, Louisiana, 21 January 1863. 1 page, 7 7/8 x 4 3/8 in. Docketed to verso. Acknowledgment that Capt. Loren A. Gallup was paid $125 in full for the coffin ordered on 13 January 1863.

Letter signed by Chris. W. Harrison. Headquarters of the 26th Connecticut, Camp Parapet, Louisiana, 26 January 1863. 1 page, 4to, 8 x 10 in. Docketed to verso. Acknowledgement to have received from Capt. L.A. Gallup the effects of Charles Meyer.

As noted in the "Final Statement," Charles H. Miner was a farmer from Lyme, Connecticut and he enlisted at Norwich on 30 August 1862, mustering in on 10 November 1862 into Company F of the 26th Connecticut Infantry. He died just 2 months later of disease at the camp hospital at Camp Parapet in Carrollton, Louisiana while the regiment was attached to Sherman's Division in the Department of the Gulf. The documents here record the final accounting of his service especially including his casket and burial.

Condition: occasional short separations along old folds, some toning, some puncturing.
