Civil War ALS Re: Jeff Davis Captured, Drunk Soldiers
Autograph Letter Twice Signed, “Osmon C. Baker”, 1 p. front and verso, May 16, 1865, Hampden, 7.75” x 9.75”. Flattened mailing folds, minor toning, chips at edges, scattered foxing, creasing. Writing is faded, slightly affecting legibility in some areas, else Good to Very Good.
Minister Baker writes to his wife regarding a variety of subjects; drunk soldiers returning on train, “I made all my connections and reached Bangor safely, though an hour or two after the time. We had a very long train-a large number of returning soldiers. Some of them were intoxicated which made the journey quite unpleasant”; Jefferson Davis’ capture, “The capture of Jefferson Davis gives pleasure here”; news about Lincoln assassins, “Please preserve all the Boston Journals which contain the testimony published on the trial of the Assassins of the President”; and the Penobscot Indians, “The Penobscot Indians reside on the islands on the River. We visited one of the villages. One of the first Indians I saw was Dr Colby - you recollect that he and his friends camped out at Fosterville for some time. The Indians live in comfortable houses and dress quite well.”
