Message from the President of the United States to the Two Houses of Congress, at the Commencement of the First Session of the Thirty-Fourth Congress. 34th Congress, 1st Session, House of Representatives., Ex. Doc. No. 1. Washington, D.C.: Cornelius Wendell, 1855.

Civil War-era inscription to front flyleaf: "Jeff Davis is a son of a Bitch and all others" followed in large letters "Rebble". On three other fly leaves are ownership inscriptions of John Randolph Jackson of Baltimore, Maryland, of the 1st Regiment PHB Maryland Volunteers Co. G. On one leaf, he includes a lovely drawing a waving American flag reading "The Union forever" and the inscription "Old Baltimore Ever True to the Union" and "Delphi Carroll Co., Indiana". A final page includes several inscriptions of "Baltimore, Md" and "1862."

The enthusiastic soldier was John Randolph Jackson of Baltimore, Maryland, who enlisted into Company G of the 1st Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade (PHB) on 24 August 1861. After early railroad guard duty, the 1st MD Infantry moved south into Virginia where they participated in the Siege of Harper's Ferry. In June 1863, the regiment joined Lockwood's Brigade, VIII (8th) Army Corps and marched to Gettysburg. On the second day of the battle, they constructed breastworks south of Culp's Hill that were later captured by Allegheny Johnson's division. On the third day, they held back attacks by Johnson's division with bloody fighting until Johnson broke off the attack around 11:00 am.
