Soldier's metal ID disc with battle honors. Obverse stamped: "James R. Jones / Marshall / Co. B. / 6th Reg. / Mich. / Cavalry." Reverse stamped: "So. Mountain. / Antietam. / Fredericksburg / Chancellorsville."

Metal ID tag inscribed to James R. Jones of company "B," 6th Michigan Cavalry, of the famed Michigan Brigade or Custer’s Brigade. The battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville were added to the obverse of the disc, likely by a regimental sutler or vendor who sought to highlight the regiment’s engagements.

The 6th Michigan Cavalry was a well-known regiment commanded for a time by General George Armstrong Custer. Primarily engaged in the Eastern Theatre of the war, they are best remembered today for their association with Custer and for their participation at the Battle of Gettysburg. Material relating to the 6th Michigan Cavalry is highly desirable.
