Description
Oliver Hazard Palmer (1814-1884) Union General. Palmer, was a lawyer, newspaper editor, and judge before his Civil War service. He fought under McClellan in the Maryland and Virginia campaigns, seeing action at South Mountain and Antietam. The 108th was first attached to the Defenses of Washington, under Whipple, and then became part of the Second Brigade, commanded by Colonel Dwight Morris, in General William H. French's Third Division of General Edwin V. Sumner's Second Corps in the Army of the Potomac. He received the brevet rank of brigadier general following the war's conclusion. A large trove of 150 documents from Palmer’s files, includes: 22 ALS’s from Palmer, signed “O. H. Palmer”, to his wife, “My Dear wife…”, all 1870’s. 5 partially printed discharges, 1863, Headquarters, Convalescent Camp.4 Furloughs, Headquarters, Defences of Washington, 1862 and 1863, boldly signed by Drake De Kay (1836-1886). 80 autograph letters signed from his wife, “My dear Husband…”, most envelopes present, some with stamps removed, 7 War dated, addressed to “Col. O. H. Palmer 108th Regnt N. Y. S. Vol’es”. ALS’s family correspondence, one from Palmer to “My dear Alice”. 8 Leases and legal documents, most signed by Palmer, all with notes in his hand. Group of newspaper clippings relating to 1870’s “Rapid Transit”. A huge archive.
