5 Confederate and Union Gen'l's Signed items

A group of five letters and documents signed by five Civil War generals, both Confederate and Union, dating from 1857 to 1876. Includes an Ozias M. Hatch signed document, a William Steele signed slip, a John W. Geary autograph letter signed, and two Thomas W. Hyde autograph letters signed. With flattened folds and expected, varying degrees of toning, soiling, and foxing. All with bold signatures. Overall very fine.

1. Partial Document Signed "O.M. Hatch." Measuring 8.5" x 5.25", Springfield, dated May 29, 1857. A partial, clipped document signed by Hatch, with the Great Seal of the State of Illinois and countersigned by William H. Bissell.
2. Small Slip Signed "Wm Steele Brig Gen." Measuring 3.5" x 3", "Head Qrs Steeles Cav Div May 8th 1868."
3. Autograph Letter Signed "Jno. W. Geary." 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 8", Harrisburg, dated January 30, 1868. Addressed to "My dear Painter" on Pennsylvania Executive Chamber letterhead. Geary comments on a letter written by Hon. John Covode to Gov. FENTON, reproaching him for suggesting that the Confederate dead, killed in battle, be reinterred in cemeteries where the Union soldiers are buried.
4. Autograph Letter Signed "Hyde." 1p, measuring 5" x 8", Bath, Maine, dated September 14, 1875. Addressed to "Connor" on Bath Iron Foundry letterhead. Discussing the upcoming Senate presidency race in which he is running.
5. Autograph Letter Signed "Thos. W. Hyde." 2pp, measuring 5" x 8", Bath, Maine, dated July 11, 1876. Writing as Mayor of Bath, Hyde writes again to Connor about opposition to a recent trustee nomination which might result in the withdrawal of numerous female board members.

Ozias M. Hatch (1814-1893) was the 13th Illinois Secretary of State and during the Civil War oversaw the raising of troops. It was on Hatch's recommendation, along with Judge Jesse K. Dubois, that Ulysses S. Grant should be given command of one of the Illinois regiments. Hatch also frequently visited troops in the field, alongside President Lincoln.

William Steele (1819-1885) was a career military officer and businessman who served as the 16th adjutant general of Texas from 1874 until 1879. He previously served as a senior officer of the Confederate States Army and commanded cavalry in the Trans-Mississippi Theater of the American Civil War.

John W. Geary (1819-1873) was a lawyer, politician, and Union general. At the start of the Civil War, Geary raised the 147th and 28th Pennsylvania Infantry regiments and became colonel of the latter. He was soon promoted to Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers in April 1862, and led various attacks against "Stonewall" Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Cedar Mountain on August 9, 1862, but returned to duty and served at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chattanooga, and Lookout Mountain. He oversaw the surrender of Savannah, Georgia, and briefly served as the city's military governor, where he was breveted to major general.

Thomas Worcester Hyde (1841-1899) was a Union Army colonel and the founder of the Bath Iron Works, one of the major shipyards in the United States. During the war, he fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service. He would go on to write two books about his experiences during the war and the Battle of Gettysburg, entitled "Following the Greek Cross Or, Memories Of the Sixth Army Corps" (1894) and "Recollections of the Battle of Gettysburg" (1898). He later became mayor of Bath, Maine, and served three terms in the Maine Senate.
