Diverse group of 8 Civil War era covers designed by Charles Magnus featuring patriotic motifs, each measuring 5.5" x 3", n.d., New York, NY. Covers include images of battles, naval expeditions, and scenic views with beautiful stenciling and gilt detailing to some. Notations to 2 covers include "Battle of Murfreesboro, Tenn./Dec. 31, 1862" on verso, with minor dealer's notes present on others. Varying conditions with light toning and discoloration throughout. A wonderful pictorial cover collection!
Lithographer Charles Magnus (1826-1900) worked contemporaneously to famous printmakers Currier and Ives during the Civil War and is most known for his color lithographs depicting city views, battlefield maps, and other patriotic illustrations.
