Description
Oliver Hazard Palmer (1814-1884) Union General. Palmer, was a lawyer, newspaper editor, and judge before his Civil War service. He fought under McClellan in the Maryland and Virginia campaigns, seeing action at South Mountain and Antietam. The 108th was first attached to the Defenses of Washington, under Whipple, and then became part of the Second Brigade, commanded by Colonel Dwight Morris, in General William H. French's Third Division of General Edwin V. Sumner's Second Corps in the Army of the Potomac. He received the brevet rank of brigadier general following the war's conclusion. A large trove of documents from Palmer’s files, includes: 30 General Orders, dated October, November and December 1862 issued to Palmer, or in his behalf. Includes an interesting order (# 158, October 1, 1862) issued by General McClellan regarding “Stragglers & Pillagers”. There are three “Declaration of Recruit” forms for underage soldiers who served under his command, and other official documents. There are also six autograph letters signed by Palmer (incomplete), two incomplete autograph letters, not signed and several post-war documents . An interesting archive.
